Frequently Asked Questions About Contact Form 7

A contact form seems simple until spam, configuration and styling enter the picture. This FAQ brings together what PrestaShop merchants ask most about Contact Form 7, with straightforward answers compiled from real customer conversations.

Note: this FAQ covers "Contact Form 7 - Includes CAPTCHA, reCAPTCHA" (module key ets_contactform7, sold on PrestaShop Addons and prestahero.com). It does not cover Contact Form Ultimate (ets_cfultimate), which is a separate product with its own drag-and-drop form builder.

Group 1: Compatibility & versions

Q: Which PrestaShop versions does Contact Form 7 support?

A: Contact Form 7 supports PrestaShop 1.6.0.6 through 9.x. PHP requirements depend on your PrestaShop version. Please ensure your server meets the requirements of your installed PrestaShop version.

Q: I still use the old "Contact Form 7 v2.0.7 by ETS-Soft" on PrestaShop 1.7.6.4. Does it still work, and is there a newer version I can buy?

A: Our team confirmed that v2.0.7 remains compatible with PrestaShop 1.7.6.4. However, we recommend upgrading to the latest version (v2.4.2 at the time of that reply; newer v2.5.x releases have since shipped), which brings improved performance, stability and compatibility with different PrestaShop versions. The current PrestaHero "Contact Form 7 - Includes CAPTCHA, reCAPTCHA" is the successor of the old ETS-Soft module.

Q: Does Contact Form 7 work with page builders like Creative Elements?

A: Yes. Our team confirmed you can insert the form inside Creative Elements using a shortcode or a custom hook — the module is designed to display the form anywhere you want it.

Q: Can I use the same form shortcode on several different pages?

A: Yes. For example, the shortcode [contact-form-7 id="1"] can be placed on multiple pages. If the form works on one page but not on another, the cause is usually a difference in page templates, hooks or JavaScript conflicts on the problematic page — check that first, then contact our team.

Q: Can I place several Contact Form 7 forms on the same page?

A: Yes. You can display multiple forms on the same page. If you encounter submission or session errors, make sure you're using the latest module version and contact our support team for assistance.

Group 2: Placing & displaying forms

Q: Where can I display a Contact Form 7 form?

A: Anywhere you can place the shortcode — CMS pages, category pages, product pages, or inside a page builder such as Creative Elements. Each form you create in the back office gets its own shortcode (e.g. [contact-form-7 id="1"]).

Q: How are form URLs/slugs managed?

A: When you create a form, the "Slug / Contact Alias" field is auto-generated from the form name, and you can edit it manually. Avoid special or accented characters in the slug — a customer reported that saving a form failed when the slug contained characters like á, é or ñ, and our team forwarded this to development.

Q: Can customers be redirected to a Thank You page after submitting the form?

A: Yes. Form submission redirects to the configured Thank You page — our team verified this behavior while testing a customer's site.

Q: Can I use Contact Form 7 on a multilingual site?

A: Yes. A customer used the module while translating their store into multiple languages, and our team confirmed we can assist with the translation step. Form labels and messages can be adapted per language.

Group 3: Spam protection (CAPTCHA / reCAPTCHA)

Q: Which spam protection methods does Contact Form 7 include?

A: The module supports simple CAPTCHA, Google reCAPTCHA Legacy (v2 and v3), and reCAPTCHA Enterprise. You need your own Google keys for the reCAPTCHA options.

Q: Is reCAPTCHA mandatory for the form to work?

A: No — configuring reCAPTCHA is not strictly mandatory for the form to function. However, our team strongly recommends it to protect the form from spam and bot-driven technical issues. If you see a "technical error" on submission without reCAPTCHA configured, incomplete configuration may be the cause.

Q: Is CAPTCHA enabled automatically after I install the module?

A: No. CAPTCHA/reCAPTCHA is not automatic — you must choose the protection type in the module configuration and enter your keys (for Google reCAPTCHA) before it becomes active.

Q: Does Contact Form 7 support Cloudflare Turnstile?

A: No, not currently. Our team told a customer that only simple CAPTCHA, reCAPTCHA Legacy (v2, v3) and reCAPTCHA Enterprise are supported, and that the Turnstile request has been forwarded to the technical team for consideration in a future update.

Q: reCAPTCHA Enterprise is not working on my site. What should I check in Google Cloud?

A: Our development team advises: in the Google Cloud console, set the API key's domain restriction to NONE (no domain limits), and do not enable the WAF option unless your site uses Google Cloud Armor — enabling WAF without Cloud Armor can alter the generated token and cause authentication errors.

Group 4: Emails & back-office messages

Q: Are form submissions saved in the back office, or only sent by email?

A: Both. Submissions are recorded in the back office (under Messages, where staff can view each message) and the notification email is sent to the shop. If either side fails, check the module's email configuration first.

Q: Do I need to configure SMTP for the form emails to arrive?

A: No. Contact Form 7 uses your PrestaShop email configuration. SMTP is not required, but we recommend it for more reliable email delivery, especially if your server's default email service causes problems.

Q: The test email works, but real form submissions fail with a "technical error". Why?

A: This usually indicates a problem with the form submission request rather than the email test itself. Check your CAPTCHA/reCAPTCHA settings, clear your cache, and try again in a private browser window. If the issue persists, contact our support team with your form URL.

Group 5: Security

Q: I saw a security alert on a forum claiming Contact Form 7 has critical vulnerabilities. Is the module safe?

A: Our Head of Customer Support addressed this directly: we had received no official notification from PrestaShop Addons about any security risk in our module. The alert referred to copies of our module downloaded, modified and redistributed on unofficial forums — those unofficial versions may contain code we did not write or review. We carried out an internal review to double-check and patch anything found, and customers can continue using the official module with confidence. Always download the module from PrestaShop Addons or prestahero.com, never from third-party forums.

Group 6: Troubleshooting common errors

Q: What does "Your session has expired or there was a security issue. Please refresh the page and try again." mean?

A: This is the most frequently reported submission error. It is typically session/security related rather than a broken form. Our team investigates each case individually, but the first steps are: refresh the page and try again, clear the PrestaShop cache and the browser cache, test in a private/incognito window, and check that reCAPTCHA is configured correctly. If it persists — especially with multiple forms on one page or after a module update — contact our team with the form URL.

Q: What does "There was a technical error when submitting the form. Please contact webmaster for more information." mean?

A: Our team treats this as a configuration issue in most cases. Confirm that the email settings and the CAPTCHA/reCAPTCHA keys are correctly configured in the module, check for custom hooks or shortcode issues on the page, and contact our team if the error continues.

Q: The form stopped displaying in the front office after I updated the module. What should I do?

A: This was reported after an update to v2.5.6. Our team investigated it as a possible conflict with other modules or the theme. Try disabling other recently installed/updated modules to isolate a conflict, clear all caches, and contact our team if the form still doesn't display.

Q: Does Contact Form 7 install any overrides?

A: Yes. The module installs an override at override/modules/ets_contactform7/ets_contactform7.php. Keep this in mind when debugging conflicts with other modules.

Q: If I update the module, will I lose the custom fixes your team made directly on my shop?

A: No — our team told a customer the update would have no impact on their previous issue. As a precaution, back up these two files before updating: themes/<your-theme>/modules/ets_contactform7/views/js/scripts.js and override/modules/ets_contactform7/ets_contactform7.php (and copy them back if you change themes later).

Group 7: Purchase, license & policies

Q: How much does Contact Form 7 cost?

A: Contact Form 7 is currently priced at €79.99 on PrestaHero.com, excluding applicable taxes. Prices on the PrestaShop Marketplace may differ.

Q: Can I try Contact Form 7 before buying?

A: As Contact Form 7 is a downloadable digital product, we do not offer a free trial. However, you can explore our Front Office and Back Office demos, which showcase the module's features, form templates and customization options, and configuration options, helping you evaluate whether it meets your needs before purchasing.

If you have any questions about compatibility or specific features, our support team is happy to assist. After purchase, we'll also help with installation, configuration, and troubleshooting to ensure a smooth experience.

Q: How do I get module updates?

A: If purchased from PrestaHero.com, you can update through PrestaHero Connect or download the latest version from your account. Direct purchases currently include free lifetime updates. For PrestaShop Marketplace purchases, updates are managed through your Addons account under the applicable Business Care terms.

Q: Can I install the module on a staging or development site?

A: Yes! Each PrestaHero license covers one live website and one development/test website. Register your live domain when purchasing, and provide both domains if you need support for your test site.

Q: Do I need proof of purchase to get support?

A: Yes. Our team requires verification of a valid license — the order ID or the purchase account — before providing full technical assistance, and checks that the support period is still active. Without proof of purchase, we cannot provide complete support, and a new license may be needed.

Q: Is it true I can get a discount and a free module for leaving a review?

A: We have offered special thank-you promotions in the past, but these are not guaranteed ongoing offers. Please contact our support team to check current promotions and their terms.

Q: Can I get a refund or swap the module if it does not fit my project?

A: Our priority is to help you get the most out of our module. If you encounter technical issues, our support team will investigate and help resolve them, including checking directly on your website when necessary.

If the issue is caused by our module and our developers cannot fix it after troubleshooting, you are eligible for a refund within 15 days of purchase, in accordance with our refund policy.

As our products are downloadable digital software, refunds for a change of mind or features outside the module's advertised scope are not covered. However, we're happy to discuss alternative solutions, such as exchanging the module or offering store credit, depending on your situation.

Q: What is Business Care, and does it apply to Contact Form 7?

A: Business Care is a PrestaShop Marketplace subscription covering module updates and technical support. It is included for the first 12 months and renews automatically unless canceled. It applies to Marketplace purchases, while purchases from PrestaHero.com follow PrestaHero's own support and update policies.
