Frequently Asked Questions About Payment With Fee

Charging different fees per payment method is a common need — and merchants want the rules to be transparent. This FAQ collects what PrestaShop merchants ask most about Payment With Fee, with straightforward answers compiled from real customer conversations.

Group 1: What the module does

Q: What does the Payment With Fee module do?

A: It has two functions. First, it adds an extra fee (surcharge) to any existing payment module in your PrestaShop store — such as cash on delivery (COD), bank wire, Klarna, Stripe or Google Pay. Second, it lets you create an unlimited number of custom payment methods, with or without fees, without installing additional payment modules.

Q: Which payment methods can I add a fee to?

A: Any payment module installed in your PrestaShop: COD, bank wire, Klarna, Stripe, Google Pay and other third-party payment APIs. The module is designed to be compatible with standard PrestaShop payment modules.

Q: Can I charge a fixed fee, a percentage fee, or both?

A: Both. For each payment method you choose either a fixed amount per order or a percentage of the order total. The fee type is set per payment method, so different methods can use different fee types.

Q: Can the fee be waived for large orders?

A: Yes. You can set the fee to be cancelled for orders whose total value exceeds a specific amount.

Q: Can I cap the fee when using a percentage?

A: Yes. When you choose the percentage fee type, you can set a minimum and a maximum fee value.

Q: Can I create my own custom payment methods with this module?

A: Yes — an unlimited number. Each custom payment method gets the same fee options as existing payment methods (fixed amount, percentage, minimum/maximum fee, fee cancellation above a threshold), plus its own logo, customer groups, countries and carriers.

Q: Does the module support discounts (negative fees)?

A: No. The module does not support discounts or negative fees. Fee amount/percentage must be greater than 0. Fee types are: Free, Fixed, Percentage, Percentage + Fixed. Closest options: set fee type to Free, or use Free for order over (waive fee above a cart total) — that is not a discount that reduces the order total.

Group 2: Compatibility

Q: Which PrestaShop versions are supported?

A: According to the official user guide, Payment With Fee is compatible with PrestaShop 1.7.x, 8.x and 9.x.

Q: Does it work with PayPal, Stripe, Klarna and other payment gateways?

A: Yes. The module is built to work with third-party payment APIs such as Klarna and Stripe, and customers use it together with PayPal, PrestaShop Checkout and Stripe. See the PayPal note below for one important exception.

Q: Can I add a fee for PayPal payments?

A: We do not recommend it. PayPal's policies prohibit charging customers additional fees for using PayPal. From module version 2.5.4, PayPal no longer appears in the payment method list inside Payment With Fee — PayPal itself keeps working normally on the checkout page, but you cannot attach a fee to it through this module. Always check each payment provider's policy before adding fees.

Q: Does it work together with One Page Checkout?

A: Yes — both are PrestaHero modules and are used together. One customer reported the fee disappearing from the cart summary after upgrading One Page Checkout to 3.2; our team investigated and fixed it. If the fee stops appearing after any update, contact support with your module versions.

Q: Does it work with the PrestaShop Checkout module?

A: Yes. Customers use Payment With Fee together with PrestaShop Checkout (for example to set default fee costs on its payment options).

Group 3: Fee conditions and targeting

Q: Can I apply a fee only for specific countries?

A: Yes. When configuring a payment method — an existing one or a custom payment method you created — you can select the countries where that payment method (and its fee) is available. This is a common pre-sale question and our team has confirmed it with screenshots.

Q: Can I restrict fees by customer group or carrier?

A: Yes. Fee conditions can be combined with customer groups and carriers, alongside fixed/percentage fees, minimum/maximum fee limits and tax rules.

Q: Can I set a different fee for each payment method?

A: Yes. Open the module configuration (or the Payment > Payment fees page), select a payment method and click "Edit fee" — each method has its own fee settings.

Q: Does the fee convert automatically for multi-currency shops?

A: Yes. The currency is converted automatically based on your current shop settings.

Q: Can I set tax rules for the fee?

A: According to our support team, fee conditions can be combined with tax rules when configuring a payment method.

Group 4: Fee display and totals

Q: Where will customers see the fee?

A: The fee is designed to display in every relevant area: the shopping cart, the checkout page, the order detail (for both customer and administrator), the invoice and the order confirmation email.

Q: The fee doesn't update in the order summary until I reload the page. Is that normal?

A: No — the summary should refresh automatically when the customer changes the payment method. Several customers reported this and our technical team fixed it on their sites. If you see it, first clear your PrestaShop cache (Advanced Parameters > Performance) and test in an incognito window; if it persists, contact support.

Q: The fee is calculated during checkout but not applied when the customer confirms the order. Why?

A: That is not expected behavior — customers who reported it had it fixed by our technical team. If the fee shows at checkout but is missing from the confirmed order, contact support with the order details.

Q: The fee is added to some orders but missing on others. Why?

A: This inconsistent behavior has been reported and resolved by our team in the past (it depended on the specific order conditions and configuration). Contact support with examples of affected orders so we can check your setup.

Q: Why does my invoice show the total without the payment fee?

A: The fee should appear on the invoice. One customer saw the correct total at checkout but an invoice without the PayPal fee; our team corrected it in both the module and the invoice generation. If your invoice template is custom or comes from a third-party invoice module, contact support so we can check the integration.

Group 5: PayPal totals and order statuses

Q: PayPal charged a slightly different amount than the cart total (e.g. 0.01 less). Is the module causing this?

A: A 1-cent style mismatch between the fee-inclusive total and the amount captured by PayPal has been reported, and our technical team fixed the rounding behavior in those cases. If you notice any mismatch between the cart total and the amount PayPal processes, contact support with the order number.

Q: Why do some orders go to "Partial payment" or "To verify" status after installing the module?

A: Tiny rounding differences (often 1 centime) between the fee-inclusive order total and the amount captured by the payment gateway can push orders into "Partial payment" or verification statuses, which can also affect stock deduction. Our team has resolved such cases — send us the affected orders and we will investigate.

Group 6: Custom payment methods

Q: What can I configure on a custom payment method?

A: Everything the fee system offers (fixed/percentage fee, minimum/maximum fee, fee cancellation above a threshold) plus a custom payment logo, and the customer groups, countries and carriers allowed to use that method.

Q: Can I show a custom payment method only to certain customers — for example, a TWINT option only for Swiss customers?

A: Yes. That is exactly what the per-method country/customer-group/carrier selection is for: create the custom payment method and limit its availability to the countries, customer groups or carriers you choose.

Q: Can I hide or remove the payment logo on the checkout page?

A: Yes. Each payment method has a Payment logo field. Clear/delete the logo in the method settings and it will no longer show on checkout. There is no separate “hide logo” switch — just remove the uploaded logo (per method if several share the same one). No code customization needed for that.

Q: Does the module support installment or partial payment plans (e.g. pay in 4–12 monthly payments with a fee)?

A: No. A customer asked for a payment-plan calculator based on product price; our team confirmed the module does not support this and forwarded it to the development team as a feature request.

Group 7: Pricing, license and policies

Q: How much does Payment With Fee cost?

A: Payment With Fee is currently priced at €139.99 (excluding applicable taxes) on PrestaHero.com. Prices and promotions may change, so please check our product page for the latest price.

Q: Can I try Payment With Fee before buying?

A: We don't currently offer a free trial, but you can explore our Front Office and Back Office demos to see how the module works and review its configuration options. If you have questions about compatibility or specific features, our support team will be happy to help before you purchase.

Q: Can I get a refund or swap the module if it does not fit my project?

A: We offer a 15-day refund policy for technical issues that our team cannot resolve. Please contact us within 15 days of purchase and allow our team to investigate. Refunds for a change of mind or features outside the module's advertised scope are not covered. However, we're happy to discuss possible alternatives, such as an exchange or store credit, on a case-by-case basis.

Q: What does the 1-year support include, and what happens after it expires?

A: Your purchase from PrestaHero.com includes 1 year of free technical support, covering installation guidance, configuration assistance, bug fixes, and compatibility issues.

After support expires, you can continue using the module and receiving free lifetime updates. Basic guidance remains available, but further technical assistance requires support renewal through My Account → Download & licenses.

Q: Can I use my license on a staging or test site?

A: Yes! One PrestaHero license covers one live website and one development/test website. Please register your live domain when purchasing. If you need support for your test site, simply provide both domains to our support team.
