Understanding Shipping Cost Calculation Methods in Shipping Cost Pro

The Shipping Cost Pro module for PrestaShop allows you to create custom shipping rules tailored to your store's needs. One of the key features of this module is the ability to choose how the shipping cost is calculated when a specific rule is applied. This article will guide you through the different shipping cost calculation methods available, helping you understand when and how to use each option effectively.

1. Increase default shipping cost

Choosing this option allows you to add an amount to the default shipping cost. This is particularly useful when dealing with heavy or oversized products that incur higher shipping fees, ensuring that your store doesn’t absorb the extra costs.

Calculate cost by:

  • Percentage of default shipping cost
  • Percentage of the total product price
  • Fixed amount
  • Formula

Example: If you decide to calculate the cost by "Percentage of default shipping cost" and set the increase at 30%:

  • Default shipping cost for the order: $20
  • Additional shipping cost: 30% of $20 = $6
  • Total shipping cost after applying the rule: $20 (default shipping cost) + $6 (additional shipping cost) = $26

2. Decrease default shipping cost

This option allows you to lower the default shipping cost, which can be beneficial for running promotions or offering incentives to customers who meet certain purchasing criteria.

Example: For instance, if you decide to reduce the shipping cost based on "Percentage of the total product price":

  • Total product price: $150, default shipping cost: 20$
  • Desired shipping cost reduction: 10%
  • Discounted shipping cost: $150 x 10% = $15 off the default shipping cost.

=> So, the actual shipping cost you have to pay is: $20 - $15 = $5.

3. Replace the default shipping cost with the cost of this rule

By selecting this action, you can entirely replace the default shipping cost with a new amount specified in the rule. This is ideal when you want complete control over the shipping fees for particular scenarios.

Example: For example, if you set a fixed shipping cost of $15: No matter what the original shipping cost was, the customer will be charged $15 as the shipping fee.

*Formula calculation: Additionally, you can define the shipping cost using a formula. The module offers pre-defined formulas, or you can craft your own by incorporating variables as needed.

Example: 6$ for the first product, and 3$ for each next product. We will have the following formula: 6+3*(total quantity-1). For an order of 5 products, the shipping cost would be: 6+3*(5-1) = 18$

4. Mark as "Free shipping"

Selecting this action will mark the shipping as free, overriding any default shipping costs. This method is often used in promotions or as a reward for customer loyalty.

Example: If you want to offer free shipping on orders over $100:

  • Set a rule that applies this action to all orders with a total value exceeding $100.
  • Customers meeting this condition will not be charged for shipping.

By understanding and utilizing these shipping cost calculation methods, you can better manage your shipping expenses and create targeted promotions that enhance customer satisfaction and boost sales.
