How to Configure Smarty Cache and Minification in Super Speed

Super Speed lets you manage PrestaShop's native Smarty cache and HTML, CSS, and JavaScript minification from one configuration screen. These settings can reduce repeated template processing and make frontend code smaller.

One important distinction: the Server cache option in this section uses PrestaShop's native Smarty/filesystem caching settings. It is not a Redis, Memcached, or other in-memory object cache.

What do these settings do?

  • Server cache and Smarty cache: Use PrestaShop's native Smarty caching and compilation settings to reduce unnecessary template processing. This is different from full-page cache, which stores and reuses the generated HTML response of an entire page.
  • HTML minification: Removes unnecessary characters and whitespace from generated HTML to reduce its size. In Super Speed, HTML minification is available on PrestaShop 1.7 and later.
  • CSS minification: Optimizes CSS through PrestaShop's native performance settings so less CSS data needs to be transferred.
  • JavaScript minification: uses PrestaShop's native JavaScript minification setting to reduce JavaScript payload size.

These options address different parts of page generation, so enabling one does not replace the others.

Configure Smarty cache and minification in Super Speed

  1. Open the Super Speed module configuration page in your PrestaShop Back Office.
  2. Go to: Cache and minification > Server cache and minification.
  3. Enable the caching options you want to use:
    • Smarty cache
    • Server cache
  4. For most stores, these settings can be enabled to reduce repeated Smarty template processing.
  5. Enable the required minification options:
    • Minify HTML
    • Minify CSS
    • Minify JavaScript
  6. Save the configuration.

You do not have to enable every minification option at once. If your theme or a custom module is sensitive to CSS or JavaScript optimization, you can enable the options separately and test the storefront after each change.

Check your store after enabling the settings

After saving, open several important storefront pages such as the homepage, category pages, and product pages.

Check that:

  • pages load and display normally;
  • styles and layouts are unchanged;
  • menus, sliders, buttons, and other JavaScript-powered elements still work;
  • there are no obvious frontend errors after enabling CSS or JavaScript minification.

If a layout or JavaScript issue appears, temporarily disable the relevant minification option and test again. Minification can expose compatibility issues in some themes or custom modules, so storefront testing is more important than simply enabling every option.

Once the store works normally with the selected settings, you can keep them enabled. These Smarty and minification settings optimize template processing and frontend code; full-page cache, browser cache, GZIP, and other performance layers are configured separately in Super Speed.
